Information for teachers This PowerPoint presentation gives examples of the types of questions that your students may write. They can be used to discuss the structure of a good question or fixing up a question that is not quite right. Feedback of a general nature is given when the question needs improving (as might be done in an assessment) by circling the part of the criteria that has not been met. This PowerPoint is editable so can be changed to suit the wording you choose to use with your class or specific examples from your students. www.education.nzta.govt.nz

AS 1.10 maths and statistics Driven to distraction - Posing questions

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do students in the Year 11 class surveyed at Te Horo HS in 2014 tend to have a high accuracy (%) if they are not tired compared to students in the Year 11 class surveyed at Te Horo HS in 2014 that are tired.

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do students from Te Horo HS in 2014 who are texting tend to have faster reaction times than students that were not texting. Question is fine. It might be clearer to have ‘Te Horo HS in 2014’ repeated again towards the end of the sentence but this question is fine

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do the students who text at Te Horo High School in 2014 tend to self-assess themselves tired more often than students at Te Horo HS in 2014 who do not text?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. If a student from Te Horo HS 2014 was tired does that affect the accuracy of words in the online typing site?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do students at Te Horo HS in 2014 who are tired tend to be less accurate typers than those who are not tired? Question is okay

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. From a sample taken from students from Te Horo HS 2014, do students who classified themselves as tired tend to have longer reaction times than students who did not classify themselves as tired?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do students of Te Horo HS in 2014 that are tired and are not texting tend to get a higher speed than students of Te Horo HS that are tired and texting?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do tired students tend to have faster reaction times than not tired students in 2014?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do students at Te Horo HS in 2014 with low typing accuracies tend to have higher typing speeds than the typing speeds of those students at Te Horo HS in 2014 with high typing accuracies?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do Year 11 students at Te Horo HS in 2014 tend to have faster (shorter) reaction times than those of Year 10 students at Te Horo HS in 2014?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. At Te Horo HS in 2014, do students who are texting while taking a reaction time test have worse scores than those who are not texting when taking the test? Question is okay, although it would be best to reword it. What does ‘worse scores’ mean?

A suitable comparison investigative question is one that reflects the population, has a clear variable to investigate, compares the values of a continuous variable across different categories, and can be answered with the data. Do students who are texting at Te Horo HS tend to have lower accuracies in the typing test than the accuracies of those students who are not texting?
