Flipping the Classroom: Increasing Class Time for Hands-On Work Liz Lewis and Joe Anzalone, School of Public Health

Objectives Make the material available and accessible for repeated viewings in case the students needed to review a particular Excel formula or function. Provide ample work time during class, rather than having students complete problem sets outside of class time, so that we could answer questions and troubleshoot problems as they arose.

Approach First time trying the flipped classroom Took a vote on the first day of class Nearly all students wanted to try it; a few had had other classes that had been flipped Instructor recorded sessions at home prior to class (aim: one week ahead) Students watched Echo recordings and came to class with questions Bulk of class time was used for work on problem sets

Considerations Takes getting used to the format: no immediate feedback for instructor Some challenges with audio quality – Had to buy a new headset partway through one recording session Class time felt less structured at first – Check-in at beginning of class – Review of trouble spots – No in-class case studies, which we had used in past

Sample Echo Learn how to concatenate text in Excel!

Echo360 provides usage statistics

Heat map shows areas where students watched or reviewed the most

Student Feedback The flipped classroom not only gave me the option to have the details and technical aspects of each lecture in a video I could go back to as needed, but also gave me the opportunity to have the instructors available during class time to solve questions in working through challenges and exploring ways to solve the problem sets. This was a great way to get immediate feedback from the teacher and work problems out instead of trying to tackle Excel on our own after class. I enjoyed the "flipped classroom" so that I could watch the videos and have an idea of that week’s concepts coming into class. It was motivational to do the homework ahead of time and see where I might be having issues so then I could receive help right away in class that week. It was nice being able to watch the videos (lectures) at my own pace and to stop them so I could replicate what the professor was doing in my own Excel document.

Enhancements for Future Incorporate a quiz each session to test students’ understanding of the material and provide an incentive to watch the Echo360 Instead of using class time exclusively for homework, return to in-class case studies for more hands-on practice Record supplemental material for more advanced students, and/or offer additional options for homework
