2 What Was It? Extension of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement which started in the 1940s. Inspired by African American civil rights movement. Fighting segregation and discrimination for years.

3 Why did the Movement start? Historic Discrimination and Segregation – Legal discrimination – Segregated Schools – Many farm worker live in awful conditions with very low pay

4 Groups Huelga- founded by Ceaser Chavez. Fought for the rights of Latino farm workers. MAM- Mexican-American Movement. Wanted to develop a civil consciousness in Mexican-Americans through education. EX. Published newspapers like “The Mexican Voice” LULAC- League of United Latino American Citizens- fought legal battles to help abolish segregated schools. Ex. Court case with Del Rio Texas school district. Spanish Speaking Congress- Adopted broader goals and more radical approaches to achieving them

5 Groups and People MAYO- Mexican-American Youth Organization- political activists for Latinos. Ex. Fought for voting rights Reies Lopez Tijerina: Started Chicano movement with Land grant movement Radolfo “corky” Gonzalez: picked up land grant movement from Tijerina in Denver and defines the meaning of Chicano through a poem “I Am Joaquin”

6 People Bert Corona: Worked with Chavez with youth organizations, and political groups. Tried to help all workers, legal and illegal, get fair wages and their social services Ceaser Chavez: Founded Huelga. Associated with SNCC and CORE. Organized strikes. Participated in hunger strikes (went from 175lbs to 140lbs) Jose Rodrigues- Member of MAM

7 When was it? Took place throughout the 1960s.
