2 Jeffersonian Era:  Thomas Jefferson wins election of 1800, 3 rd President (Anti- Federalist) Jeffersonian Republicanism- people should control government, should be simple and small

3 Early 1800’s Events:  Louisiana Purchase- middle of US purchased from France for $15 million

4 Marbury v. Madison  Supreme Court Case Marbury v. Madison established the power of courts, sets precedent: Judicial review  courts have power to declare laws unconstitutional  affirms checks and balances/separation of powers

5 Madison/War of 1812  James Madison- becomes 4th President  War of 1812; second war w/Britain Battle of New Orleans won by Andrew Jackson US survives, affirms status

6 Other Early 1800’s Events:  Monroe Doctrine; 1823, Pres. Monroe (5 th US Pres.) warns Europe stay out of No. & So. America  response to European interest in No/So America  Missouri Compromise- sets rules for admitting slave/free states, divides N/S North becomes more industrial, South agricultural

7 More Early 1800’s Events!  John Quincy Adams, 6 th Pres.  Andrew Jackson, 7 th Pres. Nullification Crisis; Southern states tried to ignore U.S. Law, seed of secession planted Bank War/Panic; Jackson ruined National Bank, caused financial panic

8 Trail of Tears Trail of Tears; result of 1830 Indian Removal Act, sent Cherokee Indians west

9 Westward Expansion  Santa Fe Trail/Oregon Trail were major routes west.  Mormon Migration pushed into west  Gold Rush led to flood of settlers West

10 Manifest Destiny:  Ideology that America was destined to expand to Pacific was justified by ‘divine providence/God’ many thought  Pres. James K. Polk major figure behind Manifest Destiny wanted territory from Mexico. God told me that we should have that land, and that you should make me a cake

11 Texas Independence & War w/Mexico Texas annexed in 1845, angers Mexico Mexican American War starts 1846 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848 ends war  US pays $15 million to Mexico  makes Rio Grande border  adds eventual states of Texas, California, N.M., Ariz., Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming

13 Market Revolution:  People begin to BUY goods and services in mid-1800’s No longer have to survive on self-made tools/items more free enterprise, industry, entrepreneurs  Gains in science/technology (cotton gin, motors/engines, communication)  Workers hired in large industry/mills in North

14 QUESTION:  What events helped shape the United States government?  Was the expansion of the United States inevitable? Was it justified?

15 Essay ?’s:  What role did religion play in the settlement of early America? How was religion used by the Puritans and the Spanish to justify their actions?  Describe the Enlightenment and the Great Awakening. Judge their effect on the American Revolution and their impact on today’s society.  What has the impact of Shay’s Rebellion on the formation of the Constitution? How did this reflect the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation?
