1 Peer Mentoring Workshop SEAL Conference 22 nd May 2008 Janice Graham

2 Peer mentors are trained to work with other children in school to develop positive relationships and help younger pupils with their worries. Their work will support SEAL in your school and the development of an emotionally literate school.

3 Peer Mentoring will also support your school in the following ways: Contribute to strategies related to positive behaviour management Help to address issues of behaviour and attendance Support the development of social skills Help overcome barriers to learning

4 For a mentoring scheme to be effective,the following factors need to be taken into consideration: Selection of the mentors Training and support of the mentors Publicising the scheme in school Measuring success Sustainability

5 The mentor training covered the following areas: What is a mentor? Rights and responsibilities Active Listening Acknowledging feelings Helping the mentee to find solutions Confidentiality Peer Mentor safety rules
