NEEDS ASSESSMENT David MarlowED533

The Task  In efforts to provide additional support for math students our department decided to hold math lab after school from 2:45-4:00pm.  I would like to propose that additional avenues be provided for students to access support.  5:30pm – 7:00pm math lab session  6:50am - 7:50am math lab session  Lab be help in the computer lab

The Rationale  Not all students can attend 2:45-4:00pm session  After school sports/activities  Transportation  Many high school students have to be home to watch siblings  Additional lab sessions  Additional teacher pay  Advanced math students could work lab to receive community service hours.

Problem-finding, Problem Solving Model  Not all students are being provided with an opportunity to receive additional help.  Math WASL scores are still far below reading and writing  An end of year grade report for our school found that 60 students failed their math class. The second closest subject in terms of number of failures was Social Studies with 17.  Students need math support

Instructional Needs  Course material from each math course provided so the lab teacher can provide adequate support  Teacher development  Strategies for helping struggling learners  Strategies for motivating students to learn  Strategies for supporting math education using technology  Training for students that wish to work as aids during lab times

Non-Instructional Needs  Funding  For teacher training  For teacher additional pay  Access to computer labs during the proposed lab times  Unblock web pages that could be used to support learning  YouTube, brightstorm.com

Learning Environment  Lab supervisors could be: Any teacher in the building but preferably will be math teacher. Student aids must be teacher approved.  Math lab will support classroom instruction.  Students will have access to computers. Headphones will be needed so that students can watch instructional videos.  Computer labs have a sufficient number of computers. The room also has whiteboards, a smart board and projector.

Learning Environment, cont.  Math department uses CPM mathematics.  The philosophy of WVHS is to prepare all students for Career, College and Citizenship.

The Learners  Students come from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.  Not all students have access to computers/internet at home  Support strategies that students learn during lab sessions will carry over to the classroom.  The use of student lab aids will support the idea of collaborative learning. Aids can use experience as community service and it will develop their interpersonal skills.
