ACCESS TO TREATMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA: A CALLTO ACTION UICC WORLD CANCER LEADERS SUMMIT: PARTNER EVENT: ACCESS TO TREATMENT IN LMIC

Who is the Cancer Alliance? We are made up of a collective group of 20 cancer control non-profit organisations and two individual cancer advocates. Our mandate: is to provide a platform for cancer civil society to speak with one voice and be a powerful tool to influence change for all South African’s affected by cancer.

THE CANCER ALLIANCE ECHOES THE VOICE OF CANCER PATIENTS IN SA: Cancer should and must be a NATIONAL priority. The Cancer Alliances should be afforded the political will linked with financial and human resources.

Our call to action in May 2011 outlined the following key areas: To make cancer a priority nationwide Develop a cancer control plan Implement cancer registries and data Invest in and fund education Invest in training and infrastructure Reduce stigma and discrimination

16 NOVEMBER 2013 WE CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING FOUR IMPORTANT KEY ISSUES AND PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

1. SERVICES Standardized national guidelines Equitable services across all provinces Current, well-maintained and functional equipment

2. PARTNERSHIPS Patient-centric collaborations to be formed that will increase education and awareness and focus on busting myths and removing stigmas the patients face. Collaborations to adress socio-economic issues which impact cancer patients – such as transport and sustainable nutrition.

3. TRAINING Adequate time allocated in all curricula for healthcare professionals regarding medical and psychosocial issues – HCP’s, community workers, primary care workers and patient navigators.

4. COST Pricing structures and programmes that increase access. Fast-tracking of breakthrough cancer medicines and technologies. Immediate revision and expansion of EDL in line with WHO/International best practise. Public Private Partnerships – for the patient.

Let’s ensure that the patient is at the heart of everything we do and at the centre of this Call to Action. TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT! THANK YOU – for listening to our voice
