Proposed changes to Curriculum Report for Representing Clerkships

Principles We don’t want clerkships represented differently than everything else The solution should work well with our existing ideas about architecture The solution should be as simple as possible

Proposed solution Make Sequence Block Dates and Event dates Optional Add a duration element to the sequence block Use the order attribute Move duration from sequence block event to event

What would clerkships look like? Sequence Block – Year 3 Rotations, Order = Unordered Start date = May 1, 2011 End date = April 30, 2011 Sequence Block – Year 3 Rotations, Order = Unordered Start date = May 1, 2011 End date = April 30, 2011 Pediatrics Clerkship Duration = 42 days Geriatrics Clerkship Duration = 42 days Dermatology Clerkship Duration = 42 days Internal Medicine Clerkship Duration = 84 days Etc.

What would clerkships look like? Sequence Block – Year 3 Rotations, Order = Unordered Start date = May 1, 2011 End date = April 30, 2012 Sequence Block – Year 3 Rotations, Order = Unordered Start date = May 1, 2011 End date = April 30, 2012 Pediatrics Clerkship required Duration = 42 days Geriatrics Clerkship required Duration = 42 days Dermatology Clerkship Required Duration = 42 days Internal Medicine Clerkship Required Duration = 84 days Advanced Clerkships Required Min = 1, Max = 1 Adv Medicine Optional Duration 84 days Adv Medicine Optional Duration 84 days Adv Surgery Optional Duration 84 days Adv Surgery Optional Duration 84 days

What about events within clerkships? Pediatrics Clerkship required Duration = 42 days AM Conference Instructional method: lecture Learning objective: Identify appropriate communications Duration 2 hours Peds Grand Rounds Instructional method: lecture Learning objective: Identify appropriate treatments… Duration 2 hours Patient Care Instructional method: patient care Learning objective: Take history effectively and… Duration 288 hours events

Sequence Block – Year 3; required Order = Parallel; Start date May 1, 2011; End date April 30, 2012 Sequence Block – Year 3 Rotations, Order = Unordered Start date = May 1, 2011 End date = April 30, 2011 Sequence Block – Year 3 Rotations, Order = Unordered Start date = May 1, 2011 End date = April 30, 2011 Pediatrics Clerkship Duration = 42 days Geriatrics Clerkship Duration = 42 days Dermatology Clerkship Duration = 42 days Internal Medicine Clerkship Duration = 84 days Grand Rounds, Year 3, Order = Ordered Start date = May 7, 2011 End date = April 7, 2011 Grand Rounds, Year 3, Order = Ordered Start date = May 7, 2011 End date = April 7, 2011 GR - treating pain May 7, 2011 Instructional method, learning obj, duration GR - chronic conditions June 7, 2011 Instructional method, learning obj, duration GR - patient safety July 7, 2011 Instructional method, learning obj, duration

Questions Will duration of an event change depending on where it is in the curriculum? Can we move duration from sequence block event to event? If you have something like grand rounds that all clerkships attend the first day of each month, that would have to be modeled as a sequence block outside of the clerkship. Does that work?

Important Rules Parent sequence blocks must have dates If Child sequence blocks partially overlap, dates should be used to clarify (ie dates for grand rounds, partially overlapping clerkships) Sequence blocks not using dates must indicate duration If sequence blocks overlap 100%, use order=parallel. Dates for child sequence blocks are optional.
