1 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range….
What are some ways to represent data???

2 Suppose that this tally chart shows the temperatures recorded during the third week in January of this year.

3 Let's show this data on a line plot
Let's show this data on a line plot. On a line plot, we can use X's to show the data from the tally chart.

4 Range: What would you think the range of this data would be and how do you know?

5 Range The range is the difference between the greatest number and the least number. Let's find the difference between the highest temperature and the lowest temperature in order to find the range of the temperatures that week.

6 Range 38 − 24 = 14 The range of the temperatures is 14 degrees

7 Mode: What would you think the mode of this data would be and how do you know?

8 Mode: The mode is the number that occurs most frequently in a data set. Let's find the mode for the temperatures that week.

9 Mean: What would be the mean of this set of data? How do you know?
Is there another word we could use for mean?

10 Mean: The mean is sometimes called the average.
To find the mean, find the sum of the numbers in the data set and divide the sum by the number of addends. Let's add all of the temperatures in the data set and divide the sum by the number of addends.

11 Mean: = ÷ 7 = 28

12 Median: What would be the median of the set of data? How do you know?

13 Median: The median is the middle number in a data set.
Let's list the temperatures in order from least to greatest and find the middle number.

14 Median: What’s the middle number?

15 Median: Could there be two middle numbers in a data set?
When there are two middle numbers, the mean of the two middle numbers is the median.

16 Problem Solving: Date Position 9/2001 -46 10/2001 -40 6/2002 -48
FREE DIVING: Free diving means diving without breathing equipment. The table shows the position with respect to sea level for five record free dives. Find the mean and the median of the positions Does the mean or the median represent a lower position? Date Position 9/2001 -46 10/2001 -40 6/2002 -48 7/2002 -51 11/2002 -60

17 Birds: The table shows the numbers of bird species observed in five national parks. Find the mean, median, mode(s), and range of the data. National Park Species Joshua Tree 239 Mesa Verde 216 North Cascades 178 Yosemite 147 Nez Perce 135
