1 Data Handling

2 Today we will be learning
how to sort shapes using Venn and Carroll diagrams.

3 Mental Activity We are going to look at some 2-D shapes.
We will work out the number of sides and corners they have.

4 What is the total of the sides of a triangle plus the corners of a square?
3 + 4 = 7 Multiply the number of sides of a hexagon by the number of sides of a pentagon. 6 x 5 = 30

5 How many sides do 2 pentagons and 2 octagons have altogether?
= 26 How many vertices do 6 rectangles have? 6 x 4 = 24

6 How many right angles do 5 squares have altogether?
5 x 4 = 20 How many sides do 3 parallelograms have? 3 x 4 = 12

7 Main Activity Today we will sort objects
using Venn diagrams and Carroll diagrams.

8 Here is a Carroll diagram.
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides Where should each shape go?

9 Here is a Carroll diagram.
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides Where will you put the square?

10 Here is a Carroll diagram.
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides What about the trapezium?

11 Here is a Carroll diagram.
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides And the hexagon?

12 Here is a Carroll diagram.
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides What about this one?

13 Here is a Carroll diagram.
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides And this one?

14 Here is a Carroll diagram.
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides Where will you put the last shape?

15 Can you see how the Carroll diagram works?
straight sides not straight sides four sides not four sides

16 Can you remember what a Venn diagram is?
straight sides four sides We will use these groups.

17 Sort these shapes using the Venn diagram.
straight sides four sides

18 Where will the square go?
straight sides four sides

19 Why must the square go here?
What about the hexagon? straight sides four sides

20 Where should we put the triangle?
straight sides four sides

21 Where should the trapezium go?
straight sides four sides

22 What about this four-sided shape?
straight sides four sides

23 Where should we put the moon?
straight sides four sides

24 Can you see how the Venn diagram works?
straight sides four sides

25 Group Work Sort shapes using either a Carroll or a Venn diagram.
Draw Venn diagrams using the information on Carroll diagrams. Sort shapes using either a Carroll or a Venn diagram.
