CREATING A POWERPOINT INTERACTIVE QUIZ An interactive PowerPoint quiz allows the user to link PowerPoint slides in a nonlinear order (meaning not one slide after another) instead the user can move from slide 1 to slide 100 then back again to slide 1. Step 1: Open a new Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation. Step 2: Create a title slide. Choose an appropriate title and give yourself credit. Step 3: Create a directions slide for your quiz

Step 4: Click on slide show Step 5: Click on Setup Show Step 6: Select “Browsed at a Kiosk (full Screen)” Note: Selecting “Browsed at a kiosk (full Screen)” prohibits the movement through the presentation via mouse- clicking, so that you can add interactive buttons.

Step 7: Now you are ready to setup your first question slide. Begin by selecting new slide that has the title and question box (this is the default setting). Step 8: Select the top text box and type in question 1. Step 9: Select the bottom text box and type in your first question. Step 10: After you have typed in your first question – select the bullet button on your keyboard to remove default bullets. Next, hit the return key and then select the default bullet key again and begin typing in your answer choices.

Step 11: Now you are ready to create a “correct answer” slide - “You’re right, Way to go!” Step 12: Next delete the bottom text box and if you like-add a picture in the bottom portion of this slide. You can do this by going to Insert  Picture  Clip Art, and then select your desired picture.

Step 13: Now you are ready to create a “Wrong Answer” slide – “Sorry, wrong answer. Go back and try again.” Step 14: Next, delete the bottom text box and if you like-add a picture in the bottom portion of this slide. You can do this by going to Insert  Picture  Clip Art, and then select your desired picture.

Note: If you add regular text boxes to your PowerPoint Screens that information will not appear in the outline view. Now, at this point you should have a total of five PowerPoint slides. Click on the outline view in the left task bar and it should look similar to what you see below:

Step 15: Now you are ready to add Action Buttons on your slides. Go to your desired screen and then go to the tool bar and click on Slide Show  Action Buttons  then select the button type (see below). FORWARD BUTTON BACKWARD BUTTON

Step 16: Before leaving the desired slide, you may want to add “applause” to the “You’re Right” slide or add another type of sound to the “Sorry, wrong answer” slide as a sound effect. Step 17: Click on slide show. Step 18: Click on slide transition. Step 19: Click on the sound effect of your choice.

Step 21: After you select the action button - Click on slide show and action settings. Step 22: Select the pull down button where it says “Hyperlink to::” Next, select the appropriate slide title (Example: 2.Directions) and select OK. Step 20: Now that you have typed your five slides and added your action buttons, you are ready to begin creating your hyperlinks for your action buttons and your question answer choices. Hyperlink your title slide action button by completing the following steps: TITLE SLIDE ACTION BUTTON:

Step 23: After you select the action button - Click on slide show and action settings. Step 24: Select the pull down button where it says “Hyperlink to::” Next, select the appropriate slide title (Example: 1. Fungus Unit: Interactive Quiz) and select OK. DIRECTION SLIDE (BACKWARD) ACTION BUTTON:

Step 28: Select the pull down button where it says “Hyperlink to::” Next, select the appropriate slide title (Example: 4.You’re right, Way to go!) and select OK. QUESTION 1 SLIDE (CORRECT ANSWER CHOICE) HYPERLINK:

Step 29: After you highlight the answer choice - Click on slide show and action settings. Step 30: Select the pull down button where it says “Hyperlink to::” Next, select the appropriate slide title (Example: 5. Sorry, wrong answer. Go back and try again) and select OK. Step 32: Select the pull down button where it says “Hyperlink to::” Next, select the appropriate slide title (Example: 6. Question 2) and select OK. Note: In order to hyperlink the forward button to the next question slide, you will need to create the Question 2 slide by either selecting new slide on the tool bar or copying and pasting question slide 1 after your 5 th slide (sorry you’re wrong slide) YOU’RE RIGHT, WAY TO GO! (FORWARD) ACTION BUTTON:

Step 33: After you select the action button - Click on slide show and action settings. Step 34: Select the pull down button where it says “Hyperlink to::” Next, select the appropriate slide title (Example: 3. Question 1) and select OK. SORRY, WRONG ANSWER. GO BACK AND TRY AGAIN (BACKWARD) ACTION BUTTON:

Now that you have finished formatting your first five or six slides, you can repeat the process for all additional slides. Note 1: After creating new question slides, just copy and past your old “You’re Right” and “Sorry, wrong answer” slides. Once you have copied additional slides—just redo the hyperlink for the action buttons. Note 2: Whenever you are running the interactive quiz program through the presentation mode of PowerPoint, you must use the action buttons to move forwards and backwards; however, if you wish to get out of the presentation program just hit the “ESC” button on your keyboard. Helpful Notes

Note 3: If you would like more flexibility moving around your interactive quiz, just add a table of contents. If you add a table of contents to your program, you will need to hyperlink your section links and your new action buttons. (Follow previous instructions to format new page links). In addition, additional flexibility can be provided by adding buttons to any screen so that you can move to any slide – such as a title home page, table of contents, and work cited page. You can make sections based on number questions or name each section based on question concepts. (For example: Mold, Mushroom, Yeast, Unicellular, Multicellular etc.) Helpful Notes
