DQ#2: Why was it ironic that France became an absolute monarchy and England a limited monarchy by the end of 17 th c.? Because…at beginning of 17 th c England enjoyed a strong and supported monarchy under Elizabeth I while France… had endured a series of weak monarchs and a series of religious wars (think Catherine de Medici’s sons) AND Ironic b/c French nobles had strong armies – so should have been able to check Monarchial power.
