CALVINIST AND THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION

JOHN CALVIN (1509-1564) French theologian who served as part of the Protestant Movement Birthed ideas that would eventually evolve and were adopted by many people of the time Those who embrace Calvin’s ideas were known as Calvinists

CALVIN’S ESSENTIAL IDEAS John Calvin’s essential ideas can be broken down into an acronym called: TULIP Total Depravity (depravity meaning corrupt or evil) Unconditional Election Limited Atonement Irresistible Grace Perseverance of Saints/the Elect

TOTAL DEPRAVITY Calvin argues that humans are naturally deprived of good nature because of original sin Humans are plagued by sin and unable to save himself; all are dead in sin This idea is important because it challenges the infallibility of the catholic church and that they can save humans because they too are impacted by original sin

UNCONDITIONAL ELECTION Because man is dead in sin God elected to save certain individuals. Who God elects to save is predestined and is unconditional. Why is this idea important in relation to Catholicism and the Protestant Reformation?

LIMITED ATONEMENT Atonement means to forgives or remit Because God determined that certain elect individuals should be saved Christ died for those selected souls. All whom God has elected and for whom Christ died will be saved. How does this defy Catholic teachings?

IRRESISTIBLE GRACE Those whom God elected he pulls toward him through irresistible grace. God compels man to come to Him. When God calls, man cannot help but respond because his calling is predestined.

PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS/THE ELECT Perseverance means to endure despite hardship. The elect that God has chosen and drawn to Himself will persevere in faith. None whom God has elected will be lost; they are eternally secure. All are tested but those elected will persevere despite hardship because they are drawn to God. Hardship is to be expected; it is not punishment but instead proof. Defies Catholicism how?

RECAP What does TULIP stand for? How does TULIP impact the power of the Catholic church? How does TULIP relate to the Protestant Reformation?
