2 GENERAL INFORMATION London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, was founded 2000 years ago by the Romans as Londinium. The city has been Western Europe's largest city for centuries: as early as in 1700 more than 575,000 people lived in London. Today London is not only the largest city but also one of the most visited thanks to its numerous famous attractions such as the Tower Bridge and the Big Ben.

4 The Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster, known as the Big Ben, is one of London's most famous landmarks. At the time the tower was built in 1858 its clock was the largest in the world. BIG BEN

5 The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster is the seat of Britain's two parliamentary houses, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT

6 One of the most famous parks in the world, Hyde Park is a large green lung in the center of London. It first opened to the public in 1627. The park has lots of open space and a large lake. HYDE PARK

7 A recent but already very popular tourist attraction is the London Eye, a giant observation wheel located in the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank. The 135 meter (443ft) tall structure was built as part of London's millennium celebrations. LONDON EYE

8 Madame Tussaud's display of wax figures has been fascinating visitors since the first exhibit was held in 1835. The museum is still one of the city's most popular attractions. MADAME TUSSAUD’S

9 Piccadilly Circus is a busy plaza in the heart of London at the junction of five major streets: Regent street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly and Covent Street. Piccadilly Circus is now partly pedestrianized and a favorite place for people to congregate before going to the nearby shopping and entertainment areas. PICCADILLY CIRCUS

10 The National Gallery is one of London's most important museums, with a collection of paintings spanning the period from the 13th to the 19th century. It is housed at Trafalgar Square, in an impressive neo-classical building. THE NATIONAL GALLERY
