2 Classroom Description History- Grade 6. Large room,5 rows of 4 tables that seat two at each table. 6 different periods; 45 minutes a piece Rural setting 67 males; 38 females Females are the selected underrepresented group.

3 Link to Standards WV Standards- – SS.6.H.CL5.1- trace the development of Civil Rights for minority groups in the United States (e.g., women and African Americans). – SS.6.H.CL5.2- identify key figures and key events in movements for civil rights. National Standards- – 3.2.1 - Understands and analyzes how the environment has affected people and how people have affected the environment in the past or present. These are important standards, because students need to recognize the contributions of people from both genders, women are making a big difference in the world as well as men. It also links to career goal setting since students need to see role models from their own cultural, ethnic or racial group, and gender group in order to be motivated to learn about history and to think of themselves as citizens that can make a difference. The bulletin board will be displayed during a beginning of the year unit on careers and historical events and continue during a lesson on the history of women through out history.

4 Culturally Competent Teacher These images might motivate female students to study so that they can become soldiers. In that way, it will increase their achievement and help to close the gender gap in society. The images give them role models to emulate, including multiple women in various important roles in all aspects of the military. The images help the female students in the class to feel pride in their gender, because these are well known and important members of the United States Military. The images helps the female students feel accepted in the classroom and in society, since these are positive images of high achieving people.
