Before we play make an entry in your math journal titled The Factor Game, then turn to page one in your journal and do the following… 1.Define FACTOR in your own words 2.List the factors you can multiply to get 10 3.List the numbers that can divide into 10 EVENLY 4.How are the list of factors for 10 and the list of #’s that divide into 10 evenly related?

2. FACTOR A FACTOR CAN BE THOUGHT OF IN TWO WAYS: 1.A multiplied by another number to get a product EX: 8 x 4 = 32 ….8 is a factor and 4 is a factor OR… 2. As a divisor of a number 32 / 4= 8….4 is the divisor or 32, so it is also a FACTOR of 32.

3. THE FACTOR GAME STRATEGY TO WIN: Is it better to go first or second? What is the best (worst) first move? Why? How do you know when the game is over? How do you know when you have found all the factors of a number? Is there a way to have ALL the numbers covered? How do you know when you’ve found all the factors?

Prime Numbers (best first moves) Prime Numbers only have ONE factor pair, 1 x themselves EX: 1 x 13 = 13 They build a skinny rectangular array Composite Numbers (Worst First moves) Composite numbers have several factor pairs, 1 x 12 = 12;2 x 6=12; 3 x 4=12 They build wider, normal looking arrays, and sometimes they build a perfect square array Numbers that make a square array are called SQUARE NUMBERS EX: 5 x 5 =25
