4 Capitalism vs. Communism Capitalism is an economic system in which the economy is privately owned and operated for profit Communism is an economic system in which the economy is owned and operated by the state

5 Who? The Cold War was a conflict between the Communist World (the Soviet Union and its’ allies), which supported socialism and authoritarianism, and the Western World (the United States and its allies), which supported democracy, nationalism, and capitalism.

13 Nuclear Arms Race The nuclear arms race was central to the Cold War. People believed that the more nuclear weapons a country had, the more powerful they were. As a result, both America and the Soviet Union built up their stockpiles of nuclear weapons.

14 Nuclear Warfare By 1961, there enough nuclear weapons to destroy the surface of the earth. By 1986, there was the the equivalent of one million Hiroshima-sized bombs.
