EMERGENCY ACTION STEPS In any emergency situation, follow the emergency action steps. 1. CHECK 2. CALL 3. CARE

CHECK Before you can help in an injured or ill person, make that the scene is safe for you and any bystanders. Look the scene over and try to answer these questions: 1. Is it safe? 2. Is immediate danger involved? 3. What happened? 4. Is anyone else available to help? 5. What is wrong?

CALL Calling 9-1-1 is the most important action you can take to help an injured or ill person. Make the call quickly and return the injured or ill person. If possible, ask someone else to make the call. When making the call to 9-1-1 give the location to the 9-1- 1 dispatcher first.

CALL As a general rule, call 9-1-1 in any of these situations: -Unconsciousness-Breathing Problems -Chest Pain-Severe External Bleeding -Poisoning-Severe Burns -Stroke-Seizures -Car Accident-Fire/Explosion

DECIDING TO CALL FIRST OR CARE FIRST If you are ALONE: - Call First, 9-1-1, for the following: Any adult or child who is unconscious A child or infant you witnessed suddenly collapse. Unconscious child or infant with a pre-existing heart condition.

CARE FIRST/CALL FIRST SITUATIONS Care first, that is give two minutes of care, then call 9-1-1 for the following: An unconscious child who you did not see collapse. Any drowning victim. Call first situations are likely to be cardiac emergencies where time is a critical factor. Care first situations are normally breathing emergencies.

CARE Check the person for life-threatening injuries then give care. Follow these guidelines when giving care: -Do no further harm. -Monitor breathing and consciousness. -Keep person in a comfortable position. -Reassure the person. -Give specific care as needed. -Keep person from overheating and getting chilled.

SCENARIO You hear car tires screech followed by a loud noise that sounds like cars crashing into each other. You run to the scene. When you arrive on scene you see that a car and a van have collided both drivers have hit the windshield and you see a bicycle in the middle of the road with the rider lying face down and you smell gas. What do you do?
