APA Quick Reference This PowerPoint is intended to serve as a quick reference for the basics of APA format For a more in-depth look at APA, I recommend taking a look at the Purdue OWL’s APA style guide: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/1/

Title Page APA Format Header: Left aligned at the top Running head: TITLE IN ALL CAPS Page number on right hand side Essay/article title Do not capitalize anything except the first word Centered about 4 lines down Your name Do not include any titles Centered on the line after your title No “by” or anything to specifically denote authorship Institutional Affiliation Centered on the line after your name The title of the company for which you will be performing your research For our purposes this should be “Florida International University”

Abstract APA format Title Should read “Abstract” on the first available line after the header Do not use bold, caps, or underline for the title Should be left aligned Centered and justified are both considered wrong in APA Do not indent the first paragraph Indent second or subsequent paragraphs Use a page break after the abstract; nothing else should appear on that page

Other Subsections Title of subsection Should read the subsection’s title, as in “Statement of Purpose” (no quotations) on the first available line after the header Do not use bold, caps, or underline for the subsection title Should be left aligned Centered and justified are both considered wrong in APA Do not indent the first paragraph Indent second and subsequent paragraphs Unlike the abstract, all other subsections before the References page can continue one after the other with inserting a page break

APA In-Text Citations Basic format: (Author’s last name, year of publication, p. page number) Ex: (Anderson, 2013, p. 258) Page number can be omitted for online sources and for summaries or paraphrase (you are still encouraged to put the page number whenever possible) As with MLA, if the author is unavailable, you may use the first word or two of the title instead Unlike the title of your own essay, every word that is more than four letters long should be capitalized

APA Reference Page Begin on a new page separate from the text of the essay; label this page "References" centered at the top of the page (do NOT bold, underline, or use quotation marks for the title). Use a hanging indent like MLA format Example academic article: Hyun Lim, J., Christianson, K. (2013). Second language sentence processing in reading for comprehension and translation. Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, 16.(3), 518-537. Retrieved from doi: 10.1017/S1366728912000351. Example book: Delfitto, D. (2005). Adverb classes and adverb placement. In Blackwell Companion to Syntax (83-120). Oxford: Blackwell Publishing. Example website: Bernstein, M. (2002). 10 tips on writing the living Web. A List Apart: For People Who Make Websites, 149.
