2 The Power of Information Published May 2012 Chapter 2 : Covers the information held within our individual care records. It sets out a vision in which being able to access and share our own records can help us take part in decisions about our own care in a genuine partnership with professionals.

4 ‘The power of information’ All NHS patients will have secure online access, where they wish it, to their personal GP records by 2015’ ‘By 2015, all general practices will be expected to make available electronic booking, cancelling of appointments, ordering of repeat prescriptions, communication with the practice and access to records’

5 ‘The power of information’ The Government has asked the Royal College of General Practitioners, working in partnership with patient groups and other professional organisations, to lead the development of a plan, policy and procedures to support patient access and engagement with their GP records

9 Project outline The programme is split into three phases: Phase 1- Initiation and defining the scope of work (June - September 2012); Phase 2- Specification development and initial delivery (October – December 2012); Phase 3- Implementation and roll-out (January 2013 – December 2014).

10 Challenges & Benefits Issues around provision of technology? How safe is it? What are the costs to the practices? Issues relating to sensitive data and consent. e.g. third party data What are the benefits to patients and practices? Does it lead to improved/quality care?

EMIS (LV) system functionality is basic Administration is tedious and inefficient Activity reporting is poor currently Appointment granularity needed for different clinics Patient facing records are challenging Patients need support beyond simple registration Great interest in test result notification potential
