Josh Garay Jake Chipperfield Connor Huskins Clustering@Home

Agenda Project Background Expected Outcomes Accomplishments Budget Conclusion References & Acknowledgements

Project Background Why a cluster? o Old Computers not being used Saves them from landfills Can combine weak, otherwise useless computers into something useful Recycling/”Green IT” Data security o Relevant to personal interests “Super Computing” Small scale farming Performance vs. Price

Project Background Con’t Uses for clusters? o Personal Farms o Rendering o Research(Seti@home, Folding@home) o Heavy duty processing What we were trying to prove o Ease of implementation o Cheap performance/cost reduction o Security of personal data o Reduction of E-waste o That we can!

Expected Outcomes Stand-alone image/operating system o Easy implementation on systems o User-Friendly set up User-Friendly terminals o Running on Raspberry Pi’s o Easy to set up o Efficient and secure Boosted performance Set and forget approach Wide variety of applicable uses

Accomplishments What did we accomplish: o Functioning single system image(SSI) cluster (5 nodes) What is an SSI cluster? What is a node? o VMware virtual infrastructure (For compatibility) o Remote management through vSphere and Remote Desktop o Increased knowledge base: VMware (vSphere, ESXi) Linux (Fedora, Debian, Knoppix, etc.) Many different clustering technologies(MPI, SSI, MSI, etc.) Virtual and physical Networking (Switch, firewall, etc.) Personal limitations Planning and research techniques

Accomplishments How we did it: o Linux Fedora Core 3 with OpenSSI kernel (single system image) o Terminals (Laptops, Raspberry Pi’s for management) o VMware/Virtualization (For compatibility) Key components to success: o Remote management o Determination o Availability of components o Open-Source programs/software o Documentation/Online support

Budget Projected: o Hardware/Facilities: $900 o Software: $100 o Labour: $45, 400 Final: o Hardware: $520 o Software: $0 (Excluding SAIT Licensed software) o Labour: $16, 700

Conclusion Expected Outcomes o What we wanted to see from this project Background o What we wanted to prove o Our goals Accomplishments o What we accomplished o What we learned Budget o Projected vs. Final
