Solutions

Heterogeneous Mixtures A suspension is a mixture that separates upon standing (oil & vinegar). A colloid is a type of suspension where the particles are suspended indefinitely (latex paint). An emulsion is a type of colloid where the liquids spread through out each other (mayonnaise).

Tyndall Effect The scattering of light in a colloid.

Homogeneous Mixture Solutions are mixtures where parts are mixed uniformly. Parts of a solution: – A solute is the part of the solution that is being dissolved (sugar). – A solvent is the part of the solution that is doing the dissolving (water).

Dissolving Polar compound have distinct positive and negative charges. – Soluble in water. Non-polar compounds do not have the positive and negative charges. – Insoluble in water.

Solubility Solubility is ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent. Concentration is the quantity of solute dissolved in a given volume of solution. Unsaturated solution contains less than the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in the solvent under the same conditions.

Solubiltiy (continue) A saturated solution can dissolve no more solute. Supersaturated solution holds more solute than it normally can.

Concentration of Solutions. Molarity= moles of solute/liters of solution M=mol/L
