2 -Mexico rebelled against their Mother Country Spain and gained independence in 1821 and started a “republic.” -Ruled by one man President and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna -Allows Americans to settle in Texas to increase population -Tensions rise between Texans and Mexicans and in 1829 Texas declares it’s independence from Mexico FREEDOM!!!

3 Battle of the Alamo February 23, 1836 183 Texan volunteers held off a Mexican Army of 1,800 men for 13 days before being overrun. All male volunteers were killed the women and children spared to tell the Americans that they are to stay out of Texas. Davy Crockett ->

4 -Texas was now independent and was named the Republic of Texas or the “Lone Star Republic.” -Denied annexation to the US in 1836 because Texas wanted to remain a slave state and US did not want another slave state. Texas annexed 1845. -Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna’s army of 1,800 men in only 18 minutes at the Battle of San Jacinto, April 21, 1836

5 Santa Fe Trail -William Becknell led a wagon train to Santa Fe filled with merchandise in 1821. -

6 -Cross the hostile Great Plains, rivers and then hot deserts. -Many followed after Becknell making Santa Fe a booming town and into small city.

8 The Oregon Trail -Oregon Trail is possibly the most famous of all trails. -It stretched for over 2,000 miles of wilderness from Independence Missouri to Portland Oregon.

Explain. How did you plan on defending yourselves? Did you purchase enough powder and shot for each weapon? Other than the wagon itself, what was the most important purchase you made? Explain. Did you put any thought into how you would live once you arrived in the Oregon territory? Explain. Did you make any provisions for the cold weather? What were they? Did you make any special plans for dealing with the Rocky Mountains? Did you purchase rope for any extra animals taken? Do you have faith that your plan will work? Will your family arrive safe and in one piece? If you could take any other item with you (money is no issue; modern day items authorized), what would it be and why?
