3. Y2K/Focus April 1999 S. Jarp What is the problem ?  Main “culprit” is the use of only two digits for the specification of the year. 1999 becomes 99 (Date_A) 2000 becomes 00 (Date_B) A computer may compute: If (Date_B < Date_A ) Delete_FILE_B(); So, that the most recent file is deleted !

Jarp Global CERN policy  Three fundamental principles: The Divisions are fully responsible Each Service Unit must be requested to work on the Y2K issue with high priority The problems must be solved inside with existing resources Solving the Y2K issues may mean that other activities are pushed into next year Highest priority must be given to: Safety of personnel General infrastructure

Jarp Situation today  “Traffic light” is still RED, because: Much more testing and verification needs to be done Only Admin Sector is relatively well advanced (but Payroll testing still pending) Many Divisions/Service Units still need to improve Web page(s) Detailed testing Clear definitions of ‘who does what by when’  However: A lot of progress has been made. More can be expected over the coming few months.  Full identification of all problems must be achieved by June Leaving the rest of the time for corrective action

Jarp 1999 Shutdown and the Computer Centre  The committee of IT Y2K service representatives proposes: Run down the CC on Thursday 30th No changes will be allowed Respect the holidays on 31st December/1st January Bring services back as of 2nd Highest priority to ‘general infrastructure’:  Internal network, NICE, Mail service, Web, etc. Inform the CERN community that it may take time to bring all services back Vital services on the 3rd or 4th Less vital services 5th - 7th  Other Divisions may do the same with their services
