2 Life  Born in Berkley, CA on October 21, 1929  Her father, Alfred L. Kroeber, taught anthropology  Her mother, Theodora Kroeber, had a master’s degree in psychology and collected Native American stories.  B.A. from Radcliffe College  M.A. from Columbia University  Married Charles Le Guin in 1953

3 Life  Taught French at Mercer University and the University of Idaho before settling in Portland, Oregon.  Aside from writing, Le Guin was active in the Democratic Party, in writing workshops, and in Tai Chi Chuan.

4 Influences  Her parents influenced her life as a writer. Her childhood was filled with story collecting and storytelling.  Understanding of sociology and anthropology  In her last year in college, she got pregnant and had to get an abortion which also impacted her works.  Daoist philosopy and Jungian psychology

5 Works  Discovered science fiction while reading Lord Dunsany.  Le Guin writes science fiction, fantasy, children’s books, and other genres of literature.  She did not want readers to be cheated of imagination  First breakthrough came when her story “April in Paris” got published

6 Works  As she grew as a writer and woman she became more of an advocate feminist

7 Achievements  Recognized as leading American writer of science fiction and fantasy  “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” won the Hugo Award  Boston Globe/Horn Book Award for her children’s books
