1 WELCOME TO THE BRIEFING SESSION PHYSICIAN ASSOCIATE FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY

2 Agenda Course examples and considerations from Birmingham University and the University of London Physician Associate in to the East of England Role and Function of the Physician Associate – acute and community Partnerships to support the development of the Physician Associate

3 Course Development The course follows the Competence and Curriculum Framework for the Physician Assistant (Department of Health, 2012) The course will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to support doctors in the management of patients. They will be trained in how to: Take medical histories Perform physical examinations Request and analyse test results Diagnose illness Develop treatment and management plans

4 Course specifications 3200 hours over 2 years 50% theory - 50% practice inclusive of 200hrs permitted for clinical simulation 1. Develop procedural skills in the following core areas; Cardiovascular System Respiratory System Gastro-Intestinal System Eyes Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Female Reproductive System Renal and Genitourinary System Skin Diagnostics and Therapeutics 2. List of common and important conditions (use of Matrix as guided by DH 2014) 3. Physician Associates will be expected to diagnose and/or manage conditions independently.

5 Students will exit the course with the following core competencies (DH 2012); Professional behaviour and probity The patient relationship Common core skills and knowledge when working with children, young people and families History taking and consultation skills Examination (general) Interpreting evidence/ determining the requirement for additional evidence Clinical judgement in diagnosis and management Therapeutics and prescribing Clinical planning and procedures Documentation and information management Risk management Teamwork Time/resource management Maintaining good practice Ethical and legal issues Equality and diversity Awareness of guiding principles and current developments in the NHS Public health Moving and handling.

6 COMMUNITY MEDICINE - 180 HOURS GENERAL HOSPITAL MEDICINE - 350 HOURS FRONT DOOR MEDICINE - 180 HOURS MENTAL HEALTH - 90 HOURS GENERAL SURGERY - 90 HOURS OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY - 90 HOURS PAEDIATRICS (ACUTE SETTING) - 90 HOURS …….and undertake the minimum set number of clinical hours in the following specialties:

7 Course framework and award Course will be jointly delivered by clinical and academic tutors at Anglia Ruskin University –Faculty of Medical Science Chelmsford campus course delivery 27 months to complete MSc Physician Associate award. Full-time course, 2 years – 6 modules; (37.5 hrs is the nominal working week in practice; 36 class based hours per week) 3 trimesters per academic year, 3 rd year additional trimester to complete dissertation for Masters award. September Intake (2015/16) 30 students in year 1, thereafter to be reviewed Fixed holidays Modules will cover the following core theoretical knowledge: Anatomy; Biochemistry; Communication; Development; Growth and ageing; Ethics and law; Healthcare policy; Health education; Health information technology; Histology, Immunology and microbiology; Pathology; Pharmacology and therapeutics; Physiology; Psychology; Public health and epidemiology; Sexual health and reproduction; Sociology; Teaching and assessing.

8 Professional regulatory oversight: UKAPA, UKIUBPAE, National Exam and the voluntary register. Entry requirements s tudents must have a minimum of 2:2 in a Life Sciences Degree (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Medical Science, Nursing, Physiotherapy) or equivalent qualification to be considered Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate a standard of English language (IELTS) at level 7.0 with no element below 7.0. DBS and Occupational Health clearance Selection process: All candidates will have mini osce interview process.

9 Reflections and moving forward ….. 1.Curriculum design is nearing completion – clinical placement agreements and placement circuit pattern 2.Recruitment and advertising the course through a range of marketing events and professional networks (Now to August 2015) 3.Securing governance for students and clinical placement providers across acute and primary sectors, Essex and Cambridgeshire.

10 Reflections and moving forward……… The success of the programme relies on strong collaboration with practice : regular meetings, work force planning and opportunities for students leaving the programme (internships/preceptorships etc) grow UK PA educators/support UK PA’s to stay in practice and also develop as Educators raise awareness at every opportunity of the role PA’s can have across a range of disciplines PA’s tell the story the best
