ENERGY TRANSFER I * Energy on our planet originates from the Sun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxAsKcoNYk

ENERGY FROM THE SUN COMES IN MANY FORMS.

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY  Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it just changes forms!

RADIATION- DIRECT TRANSFER OF ENERGY IN THE FORM OF EM WAVES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4t7gTmBK3g

PARTS OF A WAVE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMIdzILycTY

MUCH OF THE ENERGY FROM THE SUN IS ABSORBED …

SOME ENERGY FROM THE SUN IS REFLECTED IN OUR ATMOSPHERE

SCATTERING- REFLECTION OF LIGHT IN ALL DIRECTIONS

BECAUSE SHORTER WAVES ARE BLUE/VIOLET THEY ARE REFLECTED EASIER. LONGER WAVES REFLECT THE REDS/ORANGES. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0996ts017U

GREENHOUSE EFFECT- INFRARED ENERGY GETS TRAPPED WITHIN LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE CAUSING AN INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzCA60WnoMk

ASSIGNMENT- EM SPECTRUM POSTER

ENERGY TRANSFER II

KINETIC THEORY OF MATTER  Molecules are always in motion.  As you add heat/energy to a system molecules move faster.  Removing heat/energy to a system slows molecular movement.

THERMAL ENERGY  Total energy of motion in the molecules of a substance.

TEMPERATURE  Average amount of energy of motion of each molecule of a substance.

THERMOMETER  Thin, glass tube with a bulb on one end that contains a liquid. When the air temperature increases the liquid in the bulb expands. Cool air contracts the liquid or molecules in a thermometer. http://www.sciencechannel.com/tv-shows/how-its- made/videos/how-its-made-thermometers.htm

DENSITY-  Measure of the amount of atoms in a given area.  The faster the atoms move and the farther apart they get the fewer there will be in the same area.

PRESSURE-  Measure of how many atoms are pushing on a given space.  The fewer the atoms on a given space the lower the pressure.

VOLUME-  Amount of space that an object takes up.  The farther apart the atoms are, the more space they take up.

HEAT TRANSFER  1. Radiation  2. Conduction  3. Convection

CONDUCTION  Direct transfer of heat from one substance to another that is touching.  *Solids conduct more effectively than liquids and gases.

CONVECTION  The transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid/gas.  Hot air rises, cold air sinks.

A QUICK REVIEW http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JZciWtK6vc

HEAT/ENERGY AND EARTH SCIENCE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajQ3hm5JidU

FUSION-  Process of hydrogen atoms combining to form helium atoms. As atoms collide energy is released. Eventually this process will end.  External source of energy for the Earth.

FISSION-  The splitting of an atom’s nucleus into two smaller nuclei.  Energy is released.  Earth’s core (internal) source of energy.

ENERGY AND ENERGY TRANSFER DRIVE THE EARTH’S SYSTEMS
