Student Tips

What is the Folio? The Folio is the externally assessed component of your English Communications course. This means that I will mark it and then send it off for a SACE marker to mark it as well. You will receive a mark averaged from my mark and the SACE marker. It is worth 30% of your course. Due date is final and cannot be extended except in extenuating circumstances with medical certificates, etc.

Folio Breakdown Part One: Response to an Example of Communication You will choose a text to respond to and write an analytical essay on this text. You will need to discuss Form, Purpose, Context, Audience and Techniques used by the author. Part Two: Text Production & Writer’s Statement You will create your own choice of text. You will then write a reflective Writer’s Statement explaining the Form, Context, Purpose and Audience of your text as well as the Techniques you have used.

The process Choose your text types (some tips to come)

Text response ideas Novel Short story Poem Film/Short Film Speech Letter TV/you tube advertisement Film trailers & music video clips – can be problematic Book covers Newspaper article Opinionative article Critical Literacy articles from old English Studies exams

Text Production Ideas Narrative Expository Recount Journal article Newspaper article Opinionative article Speech Letter to the editor Creative Speculative Poetry Film Review

Tips for Choosing - Do Choose text types that you have succeeded with and feel comfortable with. You can use the same text type as you did for your Application. Take advantage of the learning you have done already!

Tips for Choosing – Do nots Don’t use the same text type for both parts of the Folio – need to show understanding of a range of text types. For Text Production – must be mainly written text, not visual. You need to respond to written language techniques mainly. Be wary of choosing your favourite film/ book/ story. You need to be able to take a step back and be objective which may be hard to do if you are too personally involved in the text.

Part One: Response to Example of Communication Use tables and processes done throughout the year to analyse your text. Make sure you refer to Context, Purpose and Audience explicitly. Also need to discuss Form (techniques) Literary devices or techniques  identify a technique; give an example; explain the effect

The process. If it helps you, you can use a question stem for the Text Analysis (Part 1)  How does _____ portray _____ in _____?  What techniques are used in ________to present the idea that ________?  In what ways does the author of ______prompt the reader to view ______?  What strategies does ______ use to show _____?  Discuss how ______ creates ________. Topic sentences/essay structures

Writer’s Statement Be aware of the text type chosen – stick to the conventions of this type! Writer’s Statement is extremely important – it is an opportunity to identify an understanding of what has been written and how it was written. You need to cover Form, Purpose, Audience, Context and Techniques

Things to watch out for! Plagiarism – if information is used from the web, especially for film reviews, then it needs to be referenced. I will need to validate that your Folio is your own work. To do this I need to see you working in class and the progression of your work through drafts, etc. Word limit – you don’t want to lose the Writer’s Statement. Aim for: Text Response - 800, Text Production – 700-800, Writer’s Statement – 400-500

Presentation of Folio Your Folio must: be on white A4 paper be stapled on the top left not have your name or the school name on it have your SACE number and school number on every page
