 The study was conducted on a seventy-four medical student group using a composed questionnaire. The questionnaire contained two personality tests: PDQ-4 (The Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire- 4) and DECAS.  The PDQ-4 test consists of 99 True/False questions that are followed- up with additional questions focussed inquires on disorders that may have clincal significance. The questions are closely aligned with the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-IV.  The DECAS personality inventory consist of 90 items and it is based on the Big Five Theory

 The personality study is the most old and ambitious area of interest within psychiatric practice.  The interest for personality disorders study has grown exponentially in the last three decades. One of the issues that drew the researchers attention is the assessment of personality and personality disorders. Thereby the personality was assessed dimensionaly and the personality disorders were diagnosed categorically.  The diagnostic approach used in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) represents the categorical perspective that personality disorders are qualitatively distinct clinical syndromes.

 An alternative to the categorical approach is the dimensional perspective that personality disorders represent maladaptive variants of personality traits.  One of the dimensional models is the Five Factor Theory, which can be used both in personality and personality dissorders assessment.  According to this model the personality is divided in five traits: - Openness - Conscientiousness - Extraversion - Agreeableness - Emotional stability

 The aim of this study is to compare a personality disorders diagnostic test based on the categorical sistem with a dimensional diagnostic test based on the Five Factor Theory.  Our objective is to demonstrate that there are significant connections between the five personality traits ( openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeability, and emotional stability) and the presence of maladaptive personality traits.

Scoring summaryThresh old Paranoid (PA)4 Schizoid (SC)4 Schizotypal (SY)5 Histrionic (HY)5 Narcissistic (NA)5 Borderline (BL)5 Antisocial (AS)3+Q99 Avoidant (AV)4 Dependent (DE)5 Obsessive compulsive(OC)4 Negativistic (NG)4 Depressive (DR)5 DECAS - Very low levels: 1 - 7 - Low levels: 8 -30 - Medium levels: 31 -69 - High levels: 70 -93 - Very high levels: 94 - 99

 In order to reach our objectives we calculated the Spearman's correlation coefficient  The correlations were made between the five personality traits levels and the maladaptive personality traits scores

 Spearman’s “r” correlation coefficient table - negative correlation - positive correlation

-“p” values table - statistically significant

Our results have shown that the personality traits scores are connected to the levels of the maladaptative traits. Regarding the five personality traits, we can affirm that: - the openness personality has low scores on avoidant personalities. - the extraversion personality trait has low scores on paranoid, schizoid, avoidant and dependent personalities - the conscientiousness personality trait has high scores on obsessive compulsive personalities - the agreeableness personality trait has low scores on cluster A and B personalities and also on the negativistic personalities - the emotional stability personality trait has low scores on the paranoid and schyzotipal personalities in cluster A, the hystrionic and borderline personalities in cluster B, and all the personalities in cluster C

 Regarding our study results we can conclude that we have statistically significant correlations between the DECAS personality inventory dimensions scores and the PDQ-4 maladaptive traits levels.  The majority of the statistically significant results were found between the agreeableness and emotional stability traits and most of the maladaptive personality traits.
