2 The Congressional Medal of honor is the highest degree of award that can be received by a member of the Armed Forces. It is awarded to those who have an act of valor above the call of duty. There is a ceremony held and the president of the United States awards it to the recipient of the Medal Of Honor.

3 Michael A. Monsoor Michael Monsoor fought in the Iraq War. His final mission was, “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” Monsoor was a Petty Officer 2 nd class. The act of valor took place on September 29 th, 2006. Organization: U.S. Navy, SEAL Team 3. He was also a combined SEAL and Iraqi Army Sniper Over watch Element. He was awarded the medal of honor on April 8 th, 2008.

4 Michael Anthony Monsoor was born April 5h, 1981 in Long Beach, California. He was the third of four kids. He attended Garden Grove High School where he played Tight-End for the football team. His father was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Monsoor was a member of the U.S. Navy and was active from 2001-2006. He received various other awards than the Medal of Honor; Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal (Combat Distinguishing Service, Purple Heart, and a Combat action Ribbon. He died September 29 th 2005 and was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery San Diego, California.

5 Medal of Honor Action The enemy activity was increasing, so he and two other soldiers took position with their machine guns. As they were watching, an undetected grenade entered through the outcropped roof. It hit officer Monsoor in the chest which he could have easily escaped, he instead protected the members of his squad by smothering the grenade with his body. He died thirty minutes later from severe injuries.

6 Character Values Michael Monsoor demonstrated several character values. One of them being a tremendous amount of courage. He was also a very gallant soldier and he showed the intrepidity to risk his life above and beyond the call of duty.
