3. Dramatic pause!! When something dramatic happens in real life or in plays & films, there is often a sudden silence. It usually comes just before or just after the event. Imagine the silence if you told your strictest teacher, ‘I haven’t done my homework.’ Think of Westerns when a stranger arrives at a saloon. The piano stops, the bar tender stops washing glasses and there is a deadly silence. Will there be a shoot out? Playwrights use a DRAMATIC PAUSE -a sudden silence to focus the audience’s attention & highlight a particularly important moment. It makes the play/ film more interesting.

WHY If it’s easier to put on a play when the audience sits on 1 side, WHY might a director choose a different stage design? the theatre is built that way director wants a challenge The play might suit a different style It makes it more interesting for the audience It makes you feel closer to the action [ more involved]
