2 Research Methods Festival University of Oxford 30 th June – 3 rd July 2008 The Timescapes ESRC Qualitative Longitudinal Study: Scaling Up Qualitative Enquiry through Time. Timescapes: Seven in one and one in seven Janet Holland

3 Oneness Major objective: the dynamics of personal, intimate and family relationships, the identities that flow from these relationships and how they are worked out across the life course and within different generations shared conceptual and methodological concerns within different disciplinary perspectives employ and elaborate the different timescapes at the heart of the study - biographical, generational and historical, linking biography and history

4 all use qualitative longitudinal methods all work within an ethical research framework, development as a live cross cutting activity all fully committed to sharing, re-using and scaling up the data generated by the study, and making that data widely available through our dedicated archive

5 seven projects span the lifecourse several cross generational, more than 400 participants from families and other groups reflect key social identifiers: gender class, race and ethnicity, locality varied identities, life experiences and resources – emotional cultural and material diverse geographical and cultural settings
