February 2012 Updates: Hahgoot’s News: Time to hit the books!

Hahgoot has been doing a lot of academic work at home in Hebrew and Maths Hahgoot is a big Geronimo Stilton fan and even found a bookmark in Hebrew about the series, to use in her special full- colour edition.

I’ve tried all kinds of things to encourage Hahgoot to read and write independently in Hebrew, like writing a sentence following a funny picture (top) and reading comics in Hebrew from “Pilon” (bottom). Barak tried to interest her in a new book or riddles.

Hahgoot’s summer uniform includes a red skirt or shorts, red and white shirt and a “sloppy Joe” (the name they give the jumpers here). This is also her sports uniform (with white shoes) and winter uniform (with black leggings).

Warming up for sports at school...

The P&C committee had a “welcome breakfast”, which included a massive Aussie BBQ breakfast (egg and bacon in a bun – very nutritious...) and a drink.

I had a long chat with Hahgoot’s class teacher at the beginning of the term, so she quickly changed Hahgoot’s homework from the usual worksheet (left) that was VERY easy for her to research projects (right).

The teacher was amazed by the first written assignment Hahgoot handed in (left). For the second homework assignment Hahgoot was asked to tell about herself, so she followed the example of the book she previously read and chose pictures to tell her story. Top right: we covered the homework notebook with interesting images.

The next week the teacher gave her a nice craft book to chose a project from. I broke the project down to steps and showed the teacher how to guide Hahgoot so she can work independently with guidance. Hahgoot chose to make a decorated flower pot from England – very ambitious!

She looked up interesting facts about England on the internet, learned to search with Google, found the country in the Atlas and started designing her own pot based on the project detailed in the book. This project took a few weeks, so you’ll see the end of it in our March presentations.

In our next presentation: Alma is 18 months old!
