Solving Equations with the Variable on Each Side 2.4
2
Objective Today you will solve equations with the variable on each side.
3
To solve an equation with the variable on both sides, you MUST put the variables on one side and the constants on the other.
4
Solve: 2 + 5k = 3k – 6 - 3k = -3k 2 + 2k = - 6 - 2 = - 2 2k = -8 ÷2 ÷2 k = -4 CHECK YOUR WORK!! 2 + 5k = 3k – 6 2 + 5(-4) = 3(-4) – 6 2 + (-20) = -12 – 6 -18 = -18
5
Your turn! 3w + 2 = 7w -3w = -3w 2 = 4w ÷ 4 = ÷ 4 ½ = w CHECK YOUR WORK!! 3w + 2 = 7w 3(½) + 2 = 7(½) 3.5 = 3.5
6
30m – 18 = 8m + 4 - 8m = - 8m 22m – 18 = 4 + 18 = + 18 22m = 22 ÷22 = ÷22 m = 1
7
Your turn! 8x – 10 = 18 – 6x +6x = + 6x 14x – 10 = 18 + 10 = + 10 14x = 28 ÷14 = ÷14 x = 2
8
Find Special Solutions 5x + 5 = 15x – 12 – 10x 5x + 5 = 5x – 12 -5x = -5x 5 ≠ - 12 NO SOLUTION
9
Your turn 7x + 5x – 5 = -5 + 12x 12x – 5 = -5 + 12x (same thing on both sides) 0 = 0
