4 1. What is percussion? Percussion means tapping the body, the principle is that air filled organs such as lungs and fluid filled organs such as stomach make particular sounds

5 2. What is palpation? Palpation means feeling a body part through the patients skin

6 3.What is ultrasound imaging?. Ultrasound uses high frequency waves to produce echoes from different tissues. A transducer picks up the echoes and via a computer converts them into an image

7 4. What is an x ray? An x ray uses electromagnetic radiation. They have an extremely short wave length which enables them to penetrate some materials such as the soft tissue of a persons body. The image which is produced on photographic paper shows bones as white and soft tissue as dark this is because they are denser

8 5. Why is it better to use ultrasound than x ray on fetuses? X rays produce radiation, which could possibly harm the baby or the woman’s reproductive organs. Ultrasound is considered harmless.
