2 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 2007 FACULTY  R & E on Computer science since 1967, Faculty founded in 1998  Departments -Computer Science and Information Systems -Mathematical Information Technology -Information Technology Research Institute  2000 master's degree students, 200 postgraduate students  Staff: 200 persons  Annual intake: ~ 220 new students  Annual budget: 11.6 million euros (2005)  Active co-operation with enterprises

3 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 2007 RESEARCH AND EDUCATION  Information systems and information processing from four major perspectives: technological, human, business and information  Scientific computing and its technical applications, software engineering, telecommunication, embedded systems, mobile computing and teacher education  Information technology is studied from three different perspectives: business and economics, cognitive science, and natural sciences

5 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 2007 PROBLEM: Information technology is not attractive to women  Portion of women in IT faculty –27% of Master students on Economics and IS –16% of Master students on Mathematical Information Technology –25% of Graduate students in the IT faculty –Portion of women applying to MIT studies is decreasing –One female professor out of the 17 professors of the IT faculty –Most of the females on the staff work on two master study branches: Digital Media and CS Teacher Education.

6 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 2007 ACTIVITIES TAKEN  Research and studies –Three Master theses –One scientific book: ” Lost and Found in Virtual Reality: Women and Information Technology” (ed. Isomäki, Hannakaisa) –One dissertation: ”Designing ICT for Mothers - User Psychological Approach”  Enhanced marketing to recruit women students

7 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 2007 GOALS FOR THE PROJECT  To increase the portion of female students (master+graduate), lecturers and professors  To find out why females do not consider IT career and IT research as valid or attractive for themselves?  To find out why female do not enter or continue on IT profession/career  To find out if some topics on IT are more attractive to women than others

8 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 2007 TASKS  Interviews-analysis of women: –applying to studies, –accepted but do not started the studies, –accepted & started the studies, –graduated, –doctoral students, –work career on IT,  Where are the breakdowns, why, do training content or role models affect on the attitudes?
