2 The students will describe the U.S. after the war by summarizing the events that contributed to social and economic unrest Announcement: There were be a bi-weekly World History Review Session in Mr. Gregg’s Room. Warm-up: Read the Primary Source on page 683 and answer the following: 1. What was the connection between the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act? 2. What do you think was the effect of the March on Washington?

3 The U.S. after the War The New Deal of FDR continued between 1945 and 1970 New Deal brought basic changes to U.S. society give examples U.S. experienced an economic boom after WWII desire to buy things after the shortages of WWII and the depression years of the 30’s real wages increased 3%/ year from 1945- 1973

4 The Red Scare-McCarthyism government investigations into communist activities in the U.S. Korean War The 1960’s and Civil Rights JFK-youngest elected President, killed 11/22/63 LBJ won in 1964 and attempted the Great Society programs and Civil Rights Reform Civil Rights Act of 1964 Voting Rights Act of 1965 MLK-march on Washington in August 1963 Social Upheaval Watt Riot Summer of 1965 MLK assassination April 1968 Vietnam protests-Kent State, Ohio 1970 Nixon elected as a law and order man

5 1. Traditional middle class groups were made up of these 4 professions. 2. These 2 new groups were added to the middle class by large companies and government agencies 3. Explain the impact on farming in Europe in the 1950’s. 4. This was created when the real wages of workers increased in the 1950’s and 1960’s by imitating the buying patterns of the middle class. 5. Identify possible reasons for student revolts throughout Europe in the 1960’s and early 1970’s

6 List some of the factors that caused social upheaval in the United States during the 1960’s and early 1970’s.

7 Read Chapter 19.2 and prepare for a Reading check on Wednesday.
