1 Smoke-Free New England Colleges & Universities A campaign to reduce tobacco use among college students in New England Clarissa García American Cancer Society, New England Division

2 American Cancer Society’s Goals for Colleges and Universities  Prohibit smoking on all college property, including campus housing.  Provide on-campus access to tobacco treatment services & products for students, staff and faculty. 3.Prohibit the sale of tobacco products on campus. 4.Prohibit the free distribution of tobacco products on campus. 5.Prohibit tobacco advertisements in college-run publications. 6.Prohibit tobacco company sponsorship of campus events, research, organizations, etc. 7.Divest stock holdings in tobacco companies.

3 Sample Timeline Fall 2003: –Work with Administration and key student leaders to put policy in place Spring 2004: –Peer to peer education and awareness to prepare for policy change Summer 2004: Train Resident Assistants, etc. Fall 2005: Implementation
