2 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 2 The presentation has been designed so that it can be used independently of GMTU Report 997 for those who want an overview of the traffic movements around Oldham but do not wish to see the detailed tabulations GMTU Reports 997 & 997P are part of a series of reports presenting the data from the 2002 GMATS surveys GMATS Surveys 2002 Report 997P - Oldham Key Centre

3 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 3 Travellers leaving Oldham Key Centre by car & bus were asked about their journeys as they crossed a cordon around the centre Rail passengers boarding at Oldham Mumps station were also interviewed This presentation gives an overview of the findings from those surveys It considers first people who had visited the Centre, then those travelling through GMATS Surveys 2002 Oldham Key Centre

11 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 11 For most activities, car trips were longer on average than bus trips Bus trips averaged around 4km for all activities and car 6km ON average car trips were significantly longer than bus trips for workers (7.4km), business visits (12.5km) and leisure (9.2km) Visitors to the Key Centre How far did they travel? 18 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 18 The average distance for all goods vehicles was 7.4 km HGVs travelled 8.2 km on average compared to 5.4 km for LGVs and 15.9 km for MGVs Commercial Vehicles How far did they travel?

20 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 20 78% of trips finished in Oldham. This did not change a lot for different destination activities 20% of people going home finished in the rest of Greater Manchester and 5% outside Visitors to the Key Centre Where did they go/for what purpose?

These next slides look at all trips crossing the survey cordon In the case of bus trips, all trips crossing the survey cordon are included In the case of rail, only those trips which start at Oldham Mumps Station were surveyed and not those passing straight through All trips passing through the survey cordon

22 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 22 87% of all trips crossing the cordon were made by car, 13% by bus and only 0.3% by rail 74% of car and 68% of bus trips finished within Oldham Only 8% of rail trips finished inside Oldham and 10% finished outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon How and where were they travelling?

23 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 23 30% of all trips were either ‘Home to Work’ or ‘Work to Home’ trips ‘Home to Shopping’ and ‘Shopping to Home’ accounted for another 14% of trips 5% of ‘Home to Employers Business’ and 5% ‘Home to Work’ ended outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon What was their purpose?

24 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 24 The average distance travelled for cars was 10km, for buses 6km and for Rail 21km The longest distances for all modes were ‘Home to employers business’ (27km) and ‘Employers business to home’ (26km) ‘Home to work’ trips were 12km by car, 8km by bus and 13km by rail. The return directions were similar except rail at 30km All trips passing through the survey cordon How far were they travelling?

26 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 26 On average there were 13 people per bus crossing the cordon between 07:00 and 19:00 This varied from an average occupancy of 9 during the morning peak (07:00 to 09:30) and 12 during the inter-peak (09:30 to 15:30) to 20 in the evening peak (15:30 to 18:30) Bus trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?

30 Oldham Key Centre Analysis 30 39% of all goods vehicle crossing the cordon were being used to move goods In the case of lorries this rises to over 82% 42% of LGVs were being used for business use and 10% for personal use Commercial Vehicles passing through the survey cordon What were they doing in the Key Centre?
