St Andrews Heights Community Association President’s Report June 2015 2014-15 – A Year of Challenges and Opportunities 1

Major Issues 2014-15 The sale of MR Land on 16 th Ave, west of 29 th Street. Stadium re-development. The new Calgary Cancer Centre. Secondary Suites. Parking. 2

Challenges and Opportunities – 2015 and Beyond As a result of the December submission to Council on the MR Land sale by 8 communities, the City has assigned a senior transportation planner as a liaison with the communities. Although the Cancer Centre initially proposed for Foothills site has been deferred, Stadium redevelopment appears to be proceeding. Secondary Suites and Laneway Housing are still on the agenda for 4 inner city wards including ours. Parking in SAH is still a concern to a number of residents. Individual street petitions are the only option to make changes. 3

Challenges and Opportunities – 2015 and Beyond The sale of Chief Crowfoot School is pending and it is not clear what of re-development might be proposed. The Executive will continue to update our Councillor and City Administration on issues of concern to SAH residents. The Executive and our South Shaganappi representatives will continue to work with other communities on major development projects to ensure community concerns are addressed – Stadium, Calgary Cancer Centre, West Campus, Crowchild Trail… Effective communications – SAH Executive and Residents – membership drive will ask all residents providing e mail addresses for permission to communicate via e mail. Hall Coordinator (s) required. 4

Speaker’s Notes on Major Issues In early December, 8 communities along the 16 th Ave corridor made presentations to City Council opposing the sale of MR Land on 16 th Ave west of 29 th St to Western Securities. The opposition was based on the lack of a long term plan for traffic and transportation management along 16 th Ave from 14 th Street NW through to the western edge of the City. Council approved the sale 14-0. Western Securities has held several open houses since our last AGM. They recently showcased the site plan they will submit as their DP Application. WS purchased just over 1 acre of MR Land along 16 th Ave. This has provided more flexibility for the site design. The 3 tallest buildings are each 1 floor shorter but their footprints have expanded. The site still includes a mix of residential, commercial, medical offices and a hotel. Traffic congestion at 16 th Ave and 29 th St. remains a major concern for several communities. The new NDP government has not made a final decision on the location of the new Calgary Cancer Centre. AHS is reviewing the Master Plan for the Foothills Medical Centre and the entire site. The parkade project has been delayed indefinitely. 5

Speaker’s Notes on Major Issues Secondary Suites. We presented the results of last summer’s survey to our Councillor but our Councillor disagrees with our community’s position. There is considerable opposition to sec suites in the 4 wards and beyond. Council is still very divided so it is difficult to assess what if any bylaw amendments Council will approve. Parking. The Parking Authority will not endorse community wide standards even if they are widely supported in a survey of residents. They are restricted to only considering street by street petitions to amend a street’s parking status. Individuals on a street must initiate a petition. Members of the CA Executive are prepared to help support the circulation of a petition. 6

Speaker’s Notes on Challenges and Opportunities City Transportation Liaison. Jacques met with a senior transportation planner. Of course, the City has initiated another review of Crowchild Trail. As part of that review, a number of intersections along 16 th Ave will be studied – from Shaganappi through 29 th St, University Drive, Crowchild and 19 th St NW. So lots of moving pieces based on a number of proposed and possible developments as well as new transportation requirements. As part of the DP review and approval, we should receive a plan for upgrades to 16 th Ave and 29 th St – additional turning lanes in all 4 directions. 7
