Project EoS Erschließung objektreicher Spezialsammlungen (EoS - Opening of natural history collections that are rich on objects) Using the entomological collection of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin as an example Period: 01.02.2013 – 30.09.2015 Budget: 1,4 Mill (50% in-house) Symposium Mass Digitization, 9. 3 Digitization

Mass digitization of insect drawers at the MfN Symposium Mass Digitization, 9. September 2014, Berlin

> 6.000 scanned drawers > 40.000 species 45 minutes for one drawer –Transport –QR-Code for each species and recording of species names –Scanning –Testing (correct stitching and QR-Codes working) –Communication 30 drawers per day Some statistics Symposium Mass Digitization, 9. September 2014, Berlin

o Visiting of museums is for scientists not always possible  too expensive to visit every relevant museum for the own research  too time consuming  Researchers often focus their attention on the larger collections, while institutions with more modest holdings are either overlooked or intentionally ignored o Important specimens go undiscovered for many years o Images can also assist a researcher in determining whether type specimens actually have to be borrowed o Images would enable better planning prior to an actual visit to a collection o Online data portals is the most effective way to optimize data quality Why digitizing insect drawers ? Symposium Mass Digitization, 9. September 2014, Berlin

o Metadata not available o The taxon name labels are not visible from above o The dorsal view does not show enough characters o Sustainability - images are outdated quickly o Size of the animals (resolution of images not good enough for small objects) o Limitation in depth of focus Limitations of drawer scans Symposium Mass Digitization, 9. September 2014, Berlin
