3 Physical Features The United States has many physical features. Physical means it is part of the land. This is a physical map.

4 Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon is a deep gorge in northwestern Arizona. It is about 1 mile deep and 277 miles long. Scientists say that the Colorado River formed the canyon by cutting through layers of rock over millions of years. The colors in the rocks make the Grand Canyon a beautiful sight.

6 Salton Sea A “Salty” Sea
The Salton Sea is the largest lake in the state of California. It is a large depression about 240 feet below sea level. The Colorado River flooded over to fill it and made the Salton Sea. The water is very salty. The Salton Sea

7 Great Salt Lake An Enormous Lake
The Great Salt Lake is even bigger than the Salton Sea. Located in Utah, it is the largest lake in the western United States. Because it is so salty, people can float in the Great Salt Lake quite easily. The Great Salt Lake

8 Mojave Desert The Mojave Desert covers about 25,000 square miles in southeastern California. It has flat desert areas and some mountain ranges. And it’s hot-normal summer temperatures in Death Valley are around 120 degrees. The Mojave Desert

13 Gettysburg Gettysburg is located in the state of Pennsylvania. A 3 day Civil War battle was fought here. It was the turning point of the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg

14 Kitty Hawk Kitty Hawk is located on the North Carolina coast. This is where the Wright Brothers made the first airplane flight. The Wright Brothers

15 Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor is a naval base located in Hawaii. It was attacked by Japanese planes in December 1941. Pearl Harbor

16 Montgomery Montgomery is a city located in Alabama. This is where Martin Luther King, Jr., led a famous bus boycott after Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man. Rosa Parks
