3 Families & God’s Plan O The basic building block of communal life O First knowledge of love, moral living, prayer, community. O Biblical view of family O Several generations lived together, each with a defined role O Faithful to God, loyal to family O Honor parents O Proverbs 19:26, 30:17,Psalm 27:10,Sirach 3: 1-16 O Jesus teaches about family O He was a loving and obedient son

4 Domestic Church O The Family is considered the “Domestic Church” O Parents are the first teachers of the faith O Teachers of communal living, each member helps the others O Experience of love O Provide nourishment

5 Parent & Child Responsibility O “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children so that they may not be discouraged” (Colossians 3:18-21) O Parents and children have different roles in the family, therefore they have different responsibilities

6 Children’s Responsibilities O Right attitude O Respect O Listen to parents with an open and patient attitude O Gratitude O Express appreciation for all that parents do for their children O Obedience O You must follow the rules and regulations given by your parents O Assistance O Doing chores O Giving support especially in old age

7 Parental Duties O Provide a safe environment O Teach about God, prayer, and moral living O First catechists O Model the values of love, respect, caring, forgiveness, service to others, and faith. O Introduce children to Church community. O Bring them to the sacraments O Gradually bring the child to independence O Offer support in the choice of vocation

8 Respect for Public Life O Our faith should strongly influence our public life, our relationship with public organizations. O Role and nature of public groups O Being “in the world but not of the world”

9 Role and Nature of Public Groups O Natural law should be the basis for all public groups and civil authorities O Safeguard fundamental rights of all humans O Promote freedom O Work for common good O Respect the dignity of the human person O Sport Team: ?

10 Being “in the world but not of the world” O Making uncomfortable choices O Social sin O Slavery O Discrimination O Right to life issues O Lesser sins O Favoritism O Prejudice O Greed O Misinformation

11 Faithful Citizenship O Faithful to the country O Obeying just laws O Active participation in the political process O Faithful to God O Informed by faith

12 The Role of the State O State exists for the good of its citizens O Ensure basic physical needs O Promote spiritual freedoms O Embrace the concept of the common good O State’s responsibilities: O Protect basic freedoms O Provide education O Promote and allow the formation of associations O Provide a secure and stable order O Avoid infringing on the rights of other states

13 The Role of the Citizen O Active cooperation and participation in civic life O Obey civil laws, pay taxes, vote, add opinion to public policies and issues. This helps build a society based on truth, justice, solidarity and freedom. O Civil disobedience O Deliberate refusal to obey an immoral demand from civil authority or an immoral civil law

14 Solidarity O The union of one’s heart and mind with all people. To be one with all others. This union: O Leads to the just distribution of material goods O Creates bonds between opposing groups and nations O Leads to the spread of spiritual goods such as friendship and prayer

15 The Eighth Commandment “You Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor” Reality vs. Illusion

16 Honesty O God is the source of all Truth O To live in communion with God we must live In truth. O Lying is probably the sin that is committed most. O When we commit other sins we usually lie about it. O We lie to hide guilt O We lie to ourselves to justify our actions O Media encourages lies O Commercials, news articles, etc.

17 Reality vs. Illusion O Lies hurt O Destroy trust O May lead to other sins or crimes O Lies are a direct contradiction of the truth therefore a contradiction of God O Dishonesty creates a false reality, an illusion that denies God

18 Light vs. Darkness O God is light, there is no darkness in Him O When we walk in darkness, we lie and do not act in the truth. (John’s gospel) O Evil is done in the dark O Jesus is the light of the world, Jesus said O “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” O “I have come to testify to the Truth”

19 Do you live in illusion? O “Good liar?” O Create your own version of the truth O Begin to believe the lie O Satan is the “Father of lies” O Against our nature! We are made in God’s image…When we lie we deny our own nature O We must make every effort to find out the truth so that we are not living an illusion.

20 Witnessing to the Truth O Spread the truth of Jesus O Missionaries O Left their homes to spend their lives spreading the gospel O Martyrs O Died in defense of their faith, witnessing to the truth O Ordinary O Spend time serving others wherever needed

21 Modern Day Martyrs O Blessed Martyrs of Nowogrodek (1943) O 11 nuns killed for protesting the arrest and murder of Polish Jews by the Nazis O Saints of the Cristero War O 25 Mexicans, mostly priests for their ministry 1926-1929 O 498 Spanish Martyrs O Hundreds killed for their faith 1936-1939 O Blessed Martyrs of Songkhon(1940) O 7 people executed by local police O Fr. Maximillian Kolbe (1941) O volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Death camp at Auschwitz O Archbishop Oscar Romero (1980) O Killed while celebrating the Mass because of his defense of the poor in El Salvador O Sr. Dorothy Stang (2005) O Murdered by the government in Brazil. Stang had been outspoken in her efforts on behalf of the poor and the environment

23 Sins against Honesty O Perjury: lying under oath O Detraction: unnecessarily revealing something truthful that is harmful to the person’s reputation O Calumny/slander: lying or spreading rumors about someone, ruining their reputation O Adulation: excessive flattery, praise or admiration of another O Boasting/bragging: exaggerate the truth to make ourselves seem praiseworthy O Breaking a confidence: telling others what you have been told in confidence* O *permissible if the secret is dangerous O Making fun of a person to humiliate them or hurt their feelings

24 Breaking a Confidence O If someone reveals O they have committed a serious crime and refuses your advice to tell the authorities O they intend to cause serious harm to themselves or someone else (physical or emotional) O they are in an abusive situation O Something that would put you in danger or could make you a criminal accomplce.
