1 TODAY’S GOALS Discuss strategies for developing content and organization of historical markers Create a sample historical marker as a class for the Venetian Pool in Coral Gables

2 CLASS DISCUSSION- HISTORICAL MARKER CONSTRUCTION What types of information do we need to include in our historical marker? What does the “thesis” of a historical marker look like? Where should it be located? How can we organize the information within a historical marker? What should it look like structurally? How do we engage our audience with historical markers?

3 HISTORICAL MARKER DISCUSSION- TIPS AND STRATEGIES Have a strong and clear thesis to identify the purpose of the historical marker Include data about history or creation of the space Explain the current role/state of the space Hold reader interest with facts that are appealing to its specific audience

4 VENETIAN POOL Created in 1923 from a coral rock quarry Filled daily with 820,000 gallons of natural spring water from an underground aquifer Uses natural ground filtration to reclaim pool water Used for many historical events, such as the 75 th Anniversary of Coral Gables and for several orchestral performances

10 GROUP ACTIVITY- VENETIAN POOL HISTORICAL MARKER In your unit 2 groups Review “Collin’s Historical Marker” on pg. 229 Begin to construct a historical marker for Venetian Pool based off of our last two readings and following the historical marker format of “Collin’s Historical Marker” 1.Where should this marker be located? Be specific. Venetian Pool has a main building with gift shop and refreshments, a fence separating it from the street, an ornate main entrance, a pavilion for seating, the pool itself, a waterfall, caves, and a bridge. What would be the best place for the marker? 2.What will the historical marker itself read? Make sure to include a thesis and the most important information based off of our two previous readings.

11 HOMEWORK Minor Essay 3 Purpose: Inform about and describe the two sources you will use for your WTI essay. Audience: Professional, educated individuals who could theoretically read your finished historical marker. You should keep your writing objective and semi- formal but without complicated language. Genre: informative memo. This writing should be concise, specific, and thesis based. Introductions and discussion of general ideas are not necessary Submit to Turnitin.com by 10/2 before class time 300 or less words, typed, MLA format
