4 doc.: IEEE 15-13-0036-00-004n Submission Jan 2013 Rick Powell (Microsemi)Slide 4 Requirements in the Hospital Many Patients – Greater than 20 Many Channels – Frequency agility needed Short Range – 20 to 30 m Maintain sensor connection (association) to local hub Patient Mobility – In room movement with monitor stationary, and movement in Hospital with monitor mobile Moderate Data Rates – 25 to 400 kbps aggregate per patient Typical Sensors may need up to 10k bps Moderate Battery Life – days to weeks Connection to Center Data Base Connection to Center Nurse’s Station Connection to Doctor’s Offices

6 doc.: IEEE 15-13-0036-00-004n Submission Jan 2013 Rick Powell (Microsemi)Slide 6 Characteristic of Hospital Patient Monitor Cart / Desk / Wall Mounted Display Can be implemented with Desktop Computer, Laptop, or SmartPAD USB Dongle for 15.4 to wireless sensors WiFi and/or Ethernet to hospital network AC Powered, with Battery Backup Stays with Patient, but can be moved to other areas on cart with battery backup. AC powered monitor allows for higher Tx power from monitor, and higher Rx sensitivity at monitor, so the sensor can be lower power.

8 doc.: IEEE 15-13-0036-00-004n Submission Jan 2013 Rick Powell (Microsemi)Slide 8 Characteristic of Home Patient Monitor Uses same sensor configuration as in hospital Can be implemented with Desktop Computer, Laptop, or NotePAD Same USB Dongle for 15.4 to wireless sensors Internet to hospital network to provide same data to hospital staff and data base. Stays with Patient, but can be moved to other areas with battery backup and WiFi to Internet Hub.

9 doc.: IEEE 15-13-0036-00-004n Submission Jan 2013 Rick Powell (Microsemi)Slide 9 Options Patient Monitor can be separate from the Hub The Hub can be a body worn device that acts as the Gateway to home or hospital network Give better patient mobility at the cost of high power Hub that must be body worn by patient
