1 The Cold War Spreads

2 The Cold War in Latin America In 1954 the Guatemalan people elected a government headed by Jacobo Arbenz Guzman. The Arbenz government had given 200,000 acres of U.S. owned property to Guatemalan peasants. The CIA felt that this was a pro- communist move. The CIA helped overthrow Arbenz and place the Army’s leader, Carlos Castillo Armas in power. He was a dictator and killed thousands of Guatemalan civilians. http://video.pbs.org/video/2250 196575 http://video.pbs.org/video/2250 196575

3 Soviet Aggression in the Middle East and Eastern Europe In the Middle East, the United States and the Soviet Union went to the brink over the Suez Canal conflict. In Hungary, the Soviet Union Army killed 30,000 Hungarian protestors.

4 The Cold War becomes a Space Race By 1957, the U.S. had missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads 1,500 – 3,000 miles. The Soviets, however, had true ICBM’s, Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. The Soviets launched the Sputnik I, the first satellite into space. http://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=TbAXkWPasYw http://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=TbAXkWPasYw The United States responded by investing more in the science and technology to keep up with the Soviets.
