A province-wide drill First was in January 2011, with more than 470,000 participants! Now an annual event on the third Thursday of October Locally organized The goal is to get everyone in the province to participate & practice

Why have a drill? Because this is Earthquake Country! An earthquake can happen at any time!

Practice makes Perfect Practice what to do if you experience an earthquake So when an earthquake hits, you – know what to do – and do it

We’re All in This Together! What we do now determines what life will be like after

Get Ready Before the Next Earthquake! At home, work, and school… Secure Your Space - Strap furniture to walls - Put latches on cabinets - Secure TVs and computers Create or update plans - Communication plan - Where will everyone meet - Learn first aid, etc. Store more water - Four litres per person, per day - For at least 3 days, ideally for 2 weeks Organize food/supplies for 3 days Have a fire extinguisher ?

What to do….. If inside, stay inside! If outside, stay outside!

What to do….. DROP – when a big earthquake hits, you will be knocked off your feet COVER – get under a sturdy piece of furniture (a table) and cover your head and neck – you will need them after the shaking stops HOLD ON – hold on to the table and stay with it during the shaking

….. and Why Building collapse is rare in British Columbia Most people are injured in earthquakes by things falling on them Get under something to be safe! DO NOT get in a doorway! – It does not protect you from falling items, and in strong shaking you can not stand
