3 Things you need to know 1953: Cambodia declared independence from France 1965: The Vietnam war (U.S. and South vietnam vs. North vietnam and Cambodia). The purpose of the war was, so that the U.S. can stop communism from spreading. And North Vietnam establishes bases in Cambodia. U.S. bombs Cambodia in order to get North Vietnamese forces out. 1975-1979: The Cambodian genocide, that focused on the intellectuals, people of power, and people of a higher class, that opposed pol pot's philosophy. 1979: Vietnamese troops took over the capital of Cambodia (Phnom Penh), for its resources, and shelter. 1997: Pol Pot (leader of the army that fought against the U.S.) was put on trial, and was sentenced to life house arrest. He died a year later.
