(They didn’t need kings and queens to have laws) Rules and laws of what their government should be like. Colonial Documents and Ideas Constitution: a set of basic laws and rules that state the powers and duties of government.

11 Republic: The people have control over the Government -The people elect representatives. Republicanism: The support for a republic government. Limited Government: All leaders have to obey the laws and no one had total power. PROTECTION OF INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS

14  Suffrage: voting rights  Expanded in some states.  Mostly white  (+ Property Owners)  Some states Free African Americans What is Suffrage?
