essential question: How do we begin to see a rejection of the status quo of conformity emerge in 1960s society (met with conservative response)?

In general, there is an increasingly aggressive conflict between those that like the status quo and those that want to challenge the old way of doing things.

Latinos  status quo = mostly agricultural workers that faced discrimination

 César Chávez uses nonviolent protest to help unionize farm workers (i.e. United Farm Workers Organizing Committee)

 as gains were made, such as Latinos winning elections, young protesters became more aggressive over time Jose Angel Gutierrez established La Raza Unida.

 conservative backlash These protests have gone too far!

Native Americans  status quo = problems (i.e. highest poverty rate in America)  determination to solve problems while maintaining cultural identity

 the American Indian Movement (AIM) ushered in more aggressive, youth-led, activism

 conservative backlash These protests have gone too far!

Women  status quo = housewife  feminism arises in 1960s as many women want to end traditional housewife role and gain social equality

 Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique showed women that discontent with their traditional role was common

 Friedan helped form the National Organization of Women (NOW) to pursue women’s goals

 many changes emerged for women (i.e. Roe v. Wade allows abortion in the first trimester)

 conservative response in the 1970s

Youth  status quo = conformity

 counterculture rejects 50s conformity due to disillusionment from injustices of 60s  youth instead trying to establish new society based on peace and love Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters on Further

 rock n’ roll becomes mainstream, more extreme (i.e. the Beatles)

 increased permissiveness met with conservative backlash

Environmentalism  status quo = industrial economy with many pollutants  began largely with social activism of 1960s focusing on energy crisis of early 1970s a common scene during the Arab oil embargo of 1973

 Nixon responds to America’s concerns with Environmental Protection Agency and Clean Air Act

 accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in 1979 limited confidence in this energy source

 aggressive environmentalists vs. conservatives who see them as overreacting These protests have gone too far!
